The stones are worked into manageable sizes before a kisu (small knife) is used to carve detailed work. Items are polished, hand-painted if required & sealed with beeswax. Their homeland stretches east from Nairobi towards the Tsavo and Northeast to Embu.Kamba people have special skills in woodcarving and basketry. In gift shops, open-air markets and art galleries in the major cities and towns of Kenya, you are bound to find beautiful handcrafts - woodcarvings, sisal baskets and well decorated artifacts made by the Kambas. They are also involved in other activities such as hunting, farming and pastoralism.African wild olive is a rich, warm wood native to Kenya. The tree's fruit is foraged by monkeys, birds and grazing animals. Wild Olive wood is utifully grained and can be carved into durable natural serving pieces that are safe for serving food. The cooperatives who produce our beautiful Olive wood items have legal permits to fell trees. Once permits are received, the carvers travel into the bush in groups for safety and set up a makeshift camp at the site of the felled tree where they carve the items ordered. Release your inner Maasai! The Maasai live in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. They are among the best known local populations due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress. The Maasai lead a  traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, with the ability to produce food in deserts and scrublands. The Maasai live in Kraals arranged in a circular fashion. The fence around the kraal is made of acacia thorns, which prevent lions from attacking the cattle. It is a man's responsibility to fence the kraal. While women construct the houses.Warriors, all the young men in the community, are in charge of protecting livestock from predators and enemies, and, these days, of taking cattle to far away pastures during the dry season. Women and children look after goats and sheep, that are more resilient and can remain near the homesteads also during the dry spells- thus always providing milk and meat for the family. Elders keep peace and harmony in the community, settling disputes, administering justice and negotiating with neighbouring tribes. The Maasai make colourful wooden masks, intricate beaded leather belts & dog collars and the famous "Shuka" colourful blanket worn as clothing. What is Fair Trade and why should I support it?Fair Trade is an organised social movement & market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries, make better trading conditions & promote sustainability.                                                                                                                                         Friendly Horizons Ltd is proud to be recognised as a Fair Trade Importer & Supplier by the British Association of Fair Trade Shops & Suppliers (BAFTS).We have a close relationship with our African suppliers, paying agreed rates in advance & working with them to develop new products and markets. The World Fair Trade Association`s Ten Principles of Fair Trade are:Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged ProducersTransparency and AccountabilityFair Trading PracticesPayment of a Fair PriceEnsuring no Child Labour and Forced LabourCommitment to Non Discrimination, Gender Equity and Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Freedom of AssociationEnsuring Good Working ConditionsProviding Capacity BuildingPromoting Fair TradeRespect for the EnvironmentSee our other itemsPaymentShippingReturnsContact DetailsPaymentShippingReturnsContact DetailsWe accept payment by any of the following methods:PayPalCredit Card - by telephone: (UK) 01225 290786 / (overseas) 0044 1225 290786UK ChequePlease pay as soon as possible after winning an auction, as that will allow us to post your item to you sooner! We offer a range of shipping services to suit your needs.   Your order will be dispatched within 1 working day of receiving payment (Monday-Friday) and you should expect to receive it one or two days after dispatch (for orders sent RM 1st Class) or approximately three working days for economy tracked courier. In the very unlikely event that your item is lost or damaged during post, we will issue either a full refund or replacement. If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase, you can return the product and get a full refund or exchange the product for another one, be it similar or not.You can return a product for up to 14 days from the date you purchased it.Any product you return must be in the same condition you received it and in the original packaging.
